Common Digestive Problems in Cats and How to Treat Them

Vomiting โ€” When to Worry

Occasional vomiting (hairballs, eating too fast) is normal. Vomiting more than 2โ€“3 times per day, vomiting blood, or vomiting combined with lethargy, diarrhea, or weight loss requires immediate veterinary attention.

Diarrhea in Cats

Common causes include dietary changes, stress, parasites, or infections. Single-episode diarrhea often resolves with a bland diet. Persistent or bloody diarrhea requires examination and fecal testing.

Hairball Prevention

Long-haired cats are especially prone to hairballs. Regular brushing, hairball-control diets, and lubricant supplements significantly reduce frequency. Frequent vomiting of hairballs may indicate an underlying motility issue.
